AS is a chronic inflammatory arthritis that typically affects the back, neck and hips. It also often causes a monoarthritis (inflammation of one joint) or oligoarthritis (inflammation of a few joints), usually of the lower body. Patients may notice the slow onset of back pain, which tends to be worse after rest, better with activity, and associated with more than 30 minutes of morning stiffness. In addition, AS can cause eye inflammation (uveitis), which presents as eye pain, blurring of vision and redness. AS is far more common in men than women.
