Fibromyalgia is a condition of chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue. It occurs more commonly in women than in men. There may be a component of depression, irritable bowel syndrome, and sleep disturbances. The disturbed sleep results in a cycle of pain amplification, depression, and fatigue. This leads to more stress and physical deconditioning. Results of laboratory tests are usually normal and the diagnosis is aided by a physical examination. Fibromyalgia can occur alone or in conjunction with other autoimmune diseases.
